Compare ways to get care

Compare the visit, then ask about the care

Telehealth means care at a distance. Compare a licensed online service with an in-person clinic by asking how each would assess your problem.

Assessment
The part of a care conversation where the clinician (the health professional evaluating your problem) works out the problem and discusses what to do next.

Online or in the room

Online care

A visit at a distance

Telehealth means a visit using video, a call, or an online exchange.

  • Who will assess me?
  • What treatment is being considered?
  • What will the whole plan cost?
  • How will we talk and share records?
  • Can I ask follow-up questions?
  • Where would a needed exam or test take place?
  • Are you authorized to treat me where I will be?

In-person care

A visit in the room

Start by asking how the clinic would assess the problem you want help with.

  • Who will assess me?
  • What treatment is being considered?
  • What will the whole plan cost?
  • What can be assessed during this visit?
  • Would tests need a separate visit?
  • How would I ask a question after leaving?
  • Who would handle a referral?

Bring the offer back to your problem

Choose a care conversation that gives you room to ask about the treatment, alternatives, evidence and cost. Keep unresolved questions on paper. Ask for a written outline of the proposed care before paying.
